About 7 years ago now (*Gulp* I kinda hope I did that math wrong…holy moly time flies) I was sitting in Spanish class at MacEwan University. I was cautiously sitting in the back row judging up the class. I knew there would be a lot of group work and was wondering who I would be forced to work with. I didn’t want to be there. It was an elective requirement for my Psychology degree….Spanish 101….it couldn’t be that bad right?
Sitting in the front row next to a woman old enough to be my Grandma was this woman about my age yabbering on about her abusive Mexican husband loud enough for the whole class to hear. Immediately I thought, this woman is either totally crazy or she is the strongest person I have ever met.
Group work brought us together about 10 minutes later and I quickly realized that she is in fact the strongest person I have ever met. Fast forward 7 years and this woman is now my best friend. She is officially divorced from the the abusive man. She has been through counselling and speaks publicly in women’s shelters and on social media about the lasting effects of an abusive relationship, about her struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder and about how she got out.
Now this beautiful woman is in a new relationship and they are expecting their first baby. I could not be more proud of how far she has come and to have her in my life. She is a shining example of strength and perseverance and I am so excited to meet their little bundle soon.
Kristen, it has been a pleasure being your friend…I look forward to being crazy 90 year old women together!
